Gracie Pearsall (Data Science Specialist) graduated from UC Santa Cruz with an MS in Earth Science in 2024. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Environmental Science and a BS in Geology. While at UC Santa Cruz, she was a member of the Paytan Lab and conducted research on “hot moments” of extreme methane emission and the Carbon balance in coastal wetlands in the San Francisco Bay – San Joaquin River Delta. Her research utilized eddy covariance flux tower data, AI, and statistical analysis to define a best practice workflow for identifying hot moments in a dataset and to create a novel machine learning algorithm for predicting the occurrence and drivers of methane emission hot moments in Bay-Delta Wetlands. As the DIG CAMP Data Science Specialist at UCSC, she provided technical data science and GIS instruction and support for mentors and students in the program. Gracie is passionate about science communication, big data applications in the geosciences, and increasing accessibility to Earth Science. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
